Best Western Citadelle

Best Western Citadelle is worth booking if you want the cheapest of our three Besançon picks with an old-town address and a well-liked breakfast. It suits walkers and short city breaks; drivers should reserve a parking space early, as spaces are limited.

Who it suits and who should skip it

This is our Budget pick in Besançon, a 3-star hotel at €79.97 a night in our sample. Guests rate it 8.1 out of 10 from 2,060 reviews, and the location score is 9.0.

It suits travellers who want to explore the old town and the Citadel on foot, and those who care about breakfast, which guests praise. Family rooms are listed, and the 24-hour front desk helps if you arrive late.

Skip it if you need guaranteed parking without planning ahead. Guests say the secure courtyard spaces are limited and must be booked in advance. It also ranked joint 6th of 8 hotels on guest score, so it is not the top-rated choice.

Location and getting around

The address is 13 rue du Général Lecourbe, in the Besançon old town. Guests describe it as central, near the old town and the Citadel, within walking distance of restaurants.

By our straight-line estimates, Besançon Cathedral is about 5 minutes on foot (0.4 km), the Citadel of Besançon about 9 minutes (0.7 km) and the Synagogue of Besançon about 14 minutes (1.1 km). These are estimates, not measured routes.

What guests say

Location is the first strength guests mention. The second is breakfast: a varied buffet with local products, served in a vaulted cellar. Breakfast to go is also listed, which helps for early departures.

The main complaint concerns parking. Secure spaces in the courtyard exist but are limited, and you need to reserve one in advance.

Price and what you get compared with our other picks

Reference prices seen for a 2-night stay in November 2026, for 2 adults in one room, were €79.97 a night, about €160 in total. The Besançon sample median was €101.40, so this was about 21% below the middle.

Our Best Value pick, Hôtel de Paris, cost €89.92 with 8.7. Our Luxury pick, Hôtel Restaurant Spa Le Sauvage, was €153.40 with 8.6. The Citadelle saves about €10 a night against Hôtel de Paris, which has a higher score, so compare both for your dates.

Listed facilities include family rooms, free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and a 24-hour front desk. These are reference figures, not live quotes. Check today's price for your dates.

Why it made our top 3

We compared 8 eligible hotels in Besançon. Best Western Citadelle had the lowest eligible reference price once the upscale pick was set aside, with more than 2,000 reviews behind its 8.1. A central location at a price below the median earned it the Budget slot.
