The selling point is position. Guests describe the hotel as directly opposite the Cathedral and a short walk from the main train station. For anyone arriving by train for a short city break, that is hard to beat.
It suits couples, business travellers and families who want a 5-star with a spa, gym and restaurant. Family rooms are listed and pets are flagged in the property data.
Skip it if value is your priority. Some guests call it a high-end experience; others find the facilities and food overpriced. At the reference price it was the most expensive of our three Cologne picks by a wide margin.
Location and getting around
The address is Domplatz / Trankgasse 1-5 in Altstadt-Nord. Guests give the location a 9.6.
Cologne Cathedral is about 0.1 km away, roughly 1 minute on foot. The Wallraf-Richartz Museum is 0.5 km, around 6 minutes, and the Hohenzollern Bridge is 0.6 km, about 8 minutes. These are straight-line estimates and have not been verified, but everything here is close.
Parking and airport transfer details are not confirmed. If you are driving into the old centre, ask the hotel what is available and what it costs.
What guests say
The score is 8.9 out of 10 from 667 reviews, joint first of 6 eligible properties on review score. The sample is moderate in size.
Location and staff draw the most praise. The team is described as professional, friendly, attentive and helpful. The dividing line is money: guests disagree on whether the facilities and food justify the price.

Why it made our top 3
We compared 6 hotels in Cologne. The Luxury slot prioritises five-star hotels, and the Excelsior had the joint-best guest score in the sample along with an exceptional location next to the Cathedral.
The small number of hotels compared and the split views on value are worth keeping in mind.
Before you book
Check what the rate includes, especially breakfast, given the comments on food prices. Room size, noise, renovation condition and cancellation terms have not been assessed.
If you want a Cathedral view from your room, confirm it with the room type; we have no data on views. Check spa opening times for your dates.
