Who it suits and who should skip it

Hotel Astoria is our Budget pick in Coimbra, a 3-star hotel at Av. Émidio Navarro 21 in the city centre. It suits sightseers who want to walk everywhere and do not need extras beyond a room, air conditioning and a front desk that is open around the clock.

Guests who are strict about cleanliness should be aware that some reviewers report dust and stained carpets. Anyone looking for a spa, gym or pool will not find them in the data for this hotel.

Location and getting around

This is the hotel's strongest point. Guests rate the location 9.6 out of 10 and describe a central setting near the river, the old town, shops and public transport links.

The Old Cathedral of Coimbra is about 0.3 km away, roughly 4 minutes on foot. The Monastery of the Holy Cross (Coimbra) is 0.4 km, about 5 minutes, and the New Cathedral of Coimbra is 0.6 km, about 8 minutes. Coimbra's old town is hilly, so actual walks may take longer. These times are straight-line estimates and have not been verified.

What guests say

The score is 8.2 out of 10 from 2,434 reviews. Among the 8 hotels we compared, that placed it 8th, the lowest of the sample. You are choosing it for price and location, not for its rating.

Guests like two things above all: the central position and the breakfast, which they describe as a varied buffet with hot and cold options served in a historic dining hall. The property does not list a breakfast type in our data, so check what is offered and whether it is included. On the downside, rooms are generally tidy, but some guests mention dust and stained carpets.

Price and value compared with our other picks

Reference prices seen for a 2-night stay in November 2026, for 2 adults in one room, were about €79 per night, 20% below the sample median of €98.75. These are not live quotes, so check today's price for your dates.

Praxis CBR Boutique Hotel - Coimbra, our Best Value pick, was €128 per night with a guest score of 9.3 at 4 stars. Hotel Quinta das Lagrimas - Small Luxury Hotels, our Luxury pick, was €245.80 at 5 stars with a score of 9.1. The jump to Praxis is about €49 per night, a large step on a budget. In return, it has a much higher score. The Astoria wins on price and on its walk to the old town.

Listed facilities are free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and a 24-hour front desk.

Why it made our top 3

We compared 8 eligible hotels in Coimbra. Once the Luxury pick was set aside, the Astoria had the lowest eligible reference price. Its location score of 9.6 and more than 2,400 reviews make it a reliable cheap base, even with the lower overall rating.
