This is a 4-star hotel for travellers who want to walk to restaurants, bars and the stadium, then come back to a pool. Guests single out the central position and the staff, who hand out complimentary cookies at reception. Drivers get free parking, which the property lists among its facilities.
Skip it if you are strict about housekeeping. Some guests report dirty carpets, dust and stained furniture. It also has the lowest guest score of the five hotels in our sample, so if the score matters more to you than anything else, look at our other two picks first.
Location and getting around
The address is 23 Palmer St. The location score is 9.3, clearly higher than the overall guest score, which tells you the position is a real strength. Sacred Heart Cathedral is about 1 km away, roughly a 13-minute walk. Castle Hill is about 2.2 km away, around 28 minutes on foot, so it is walkable if you do not mind a longer stroll.
These walking times are straight-line estimates, not measured routes, and real routes can be longer. Guests say restaurants, bars and the stadium are within walking distance, but exact distances to them are not confirmed.
What guests say
The score is 8.1 out of 10 from 1,613 guest reviews. That is a large pool, so the number is fairly stable. Two themes come up most in praise: the central location and the friendly, helpful team at the front desk.
The main complaint is room cleanliness. Rooms are described as generally tidy, but some reviews mention dirty carpets, dust and stained furniture. Room size, noise levels and renovation condition have not been assessed, so read the most recent reviews before you commit.
Price and what you get next to our other Townsville picks
The reference price was €105.50 per night, about €211 for two nights. These are reference prices seen for a 2-night stay in November 2026 (10 to 12 Nov) for 2 adults in one room. They are not live quotes, so check today's price for your dates.
For that money the property lists a pool, a restaurant, free parking, free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a garden and a terrace. Breakfast styles listed are continental, full English/Irish, buffet and breakfast to go. Whether breakfast is included in your rate is not confirmed.
Our Budget pick, Holiday Inn Townsville by IHG, came in lower at €94.89 a night with a higher score of 8.4. Our Luxury pick, Ardo, is a 5-star hotel at €204.68 a night with a score of 9.1. Rydges sits between the two on price, and its rate was about 30% below the sample median of €151.20.
Why it made our top 3
We compared 5 eligible hotels in Townsville. Rydges Southbank was chosen as Best Value because it balances guest score, review volume and price. It is not the cheapest option, and its 8.1 score ranks last among the five. What it offers instead is a long review record, a strong location score and a price well below the sample median.
If the Holiday Inn is available for your dates at a similar rate, it may be the better deal. Compare both before you decide.
Before you book
Check whether breakfast is included and what it costs if not. Confirm the cancellation terms, as they have not been assessed. Ask about pool opening times and any fees for facilities. If noise worries you, request a quiet room and scan recent reviews for comments on room condition, since carpets and furniture are the recurring weak point.
