Tabino Hotel lit Matsumoto Milky white Onsen is our Best Value pick in Matsumoto. It is a three-star hotel with a guest score of 8.8 from 2,550 reviews. It suits couples and solo travellers who want to see the castle on foot and like a varied breakfast. Listed facilities are a restaurant, air conditioning and a 24-hour front desk.
Skip it if you need a large room or a low bill. Some guests think the rate is high for the room size. And despite the name, our data does not list bathing facilities, so if a hot spring bath is the reason you are booking, confirm what is available and whether it costs extra.
Location and getting around
The address is Fukashi 1-4-5. Guests give the location 9.2 and say the castle, convenience stores and local restaurants are all within walking distance.
By our straight-line estimate, Matsumoto Castle is about 1.1 km away, roughly 14 minutes on foot. The Japan Ukiyo-e Museum is a different matter: about 3 km, around 38 minutes. That is far for a walk, so most visitors will want public transport or a taxi for it.
What guests say
Location comes up most in positive reviews, with the castle, shops and places to eat nearby. Breakfast is the other highlight: guests describe a buffet with a wide range of Japanese and Western dishes.
Opinion splits on value. Many guests find the rates affordable, while others feel they are high for the size of the room. Our data does not give room sizes, so check the listing before you book.
The 8.8 score put it joint second of the 6 eligible properties we compared.
Price and how it compares with our other Matsumoto picks

Our Budget pick, The Celecton Matsumoto, was €92.78 a night with a score of 8.0 and two stars. Our Luxury pick, Onyado Nono Matsumoto Natural Hot Spring, was €250.72 with a 9.0 and four stars. So this hotel sits between them: about €105 a night more than the budget option for a clearly better score, and about €53 less than the luxury pick.
A buffet breakfast is listed. Whether your rate includes it is not confirmed.
Why it made our top 3
We compared 6 eligible properties in Matsumoto. Best Value balances guest score, number of reviews and price, and it is not necessarily the cheapest. This hotel combined a high score, 2,550 reviews and a 9.2 location rating, which outweighed its above-median price in our ranking.
Before you book
Check the room size against the price, since that is the main complaint. Confirm whether breakfast is in your rate and what bathing facilities are available. Noise, renovation condition and cancellation terms have not been assessed, so read the booking terms.
