London in 1 minute

London rewards a central base. Choose the neighbourhood first, then the hotel: the West End for theatres and a first visit, South Kensington for museums and families, Shoreditch for food and nightlife, the South Bank for river views.

Neighbourhoods at a glance

West EndSoho, Covent Garden, Leicester Square

Theatres, restaurants and the busiest streets. Best for a first visit and short stays.

Westminster & St James'sBig Ben, Buckingham Palace, St James's Park

The classic landmarks on foot, and much quieter at night than the West End.

South Kensington & KnightsbridgeV&A, Natural History Museum, Hyde Park

Free museums, the big park and elegant streets. The best base for families.

Shoreditch & the CityBrick Lane, Spitalfields, St Paul's

Street food, bars and design hotels, with quick Tube links to the centre.

South Bank & SouthwarkLondon Eye, Tate Modern, Borough Market

Riverside walks, food markets and views across to Westminster.

King's Cross & BloomsburySt Pancras, British Museum, Coal Drops Yard

Eurostar on the doorstep and some of the best-value central hotels.

✈ From the airport

Heathrow (LHR): Heathrow Express to Paddington in about 15 min, or the Elizabeth line to central London in about 30–40 min.
Gatwick (LGW): Gatwick Express to Victoria in about 30 min, or Thameslink to London Bridge and St Pancras.
Stansted (STN): Stansted Express to Liverpool Street in about 50 min.
Luton (LTN): Shuttle to Luton Airport Parkway, then Thameslink to St Pancras in about 35 min.
London City (LCY): DLR to Bank in about 25 min.

☀ When to go

Best weather: May to September, with long days and around 20–24°C. Best prices: January, February and November, outside school holidays. December is lively but busy around the Christmas markets and shows.

🚇 Getting around

Tap in and out with a contactless card or your phone on the Tube, buses and trains. Daily fares are capped automatically, so you don't need an Oyster card. Most central sights are 10 to 25 minutes apart on foot.

💡 Good to know

Many big museums are free: the British Museum, National Gallery, Tate Modern and Natural History Museum.
Book West End shows and the London Eye ahead in summer. Same-day theatre tickets are sold at the TKTS booth in Leicester Square.
Hotel rooms in central London are compact. Check the room size on the booking page if space matters to you.

How we pick the three

Budget is the lowest eligible reference rate. Best Value balances price and guest score. Luxury prioritises five-star hotels; if none qualify, a four-star rated 8.5+ is labelled as an upscale alternative. Every pick shows its source, review count and when we checked it. This is a data-based shortlist, not a paid ranking. How we choose →
