Where to stay in Odense

Three hotels, one for each budget, and the only area questions that actually matter in a city you can cross on foot in twenty minutes.

By Carlos de Ory · Updated 15 October 2026 · 4 min read

Odense is Denmark's third-largest city, but the centre is compact: from the station to H.C. Andersen's House is a ten-minute walk, and the whole old town fits inside a loop you can do before lunch. That changes how you should choose a hotel. You don't need to agonise over neighbourhoods the way you would in Copenhagen or Hamburg. The real questions are simpler:

  • Are you arriving by car? Then free parking is worth more than being two streets closer to the cathedral.
  • Are you here for H.C. Andersen and the old town? Then stay within walking distance of the centre and leave the car at home.
  • Is it a concert, a conference or a match? Then check where the event is first. Odense is easy to get around, but not at 11 pm in the rain.

With that in mind, here are the three hotels we would book in Odense right now.

The three hotels we'd book

♛ Luxury

Hotel Odeon

  • 4-star (no five-star hotel in Odense met our bar)
  • 8.5/10 from 2,756 guest reviews
  • About 500 m from the town hall
  • €222 a night · 10–12 November 2026

Hotel Odeon sits right next to ODEON, the city's concert and conference house, between the railway station and H.C. Andersen's House. If you are coming for a show, a congress or simply want to walk everywhere, it's hard to beat the location.

Odense has no five-star hotel that passes our review threshold, so our 'luxury' pick here is the best-reviewed upscale four-star. Nearly 2,800 reviews averaging 8.5 is a strong, stable signal: you know what you are getting.

The catch: it's a big, modern city hotel rather than a characterful boutique. If you want small and personal, look at our Best Value pick.

★ Best Value

Villa A Hotel

  • 3-star
  • 8.6/10 from 668 guest reviews
  • About 800 m south-west of the town hall
  • Free parking
  • €137 a night · 10–12 November 2026

Villa A is a small hotel on a quiet residential street, around a ten-to-fifteen-minute walk from the centre. It has the best guest score of every hotel we compared in Odense, at a price close to the city average.

That combination (top reviews, normal price, free parking, walkable) is exactly what 'best value' means to us. It works for couples, for a weekend without the car, and for business trips where you don't need a conference floor.

The catch: it's small and simple: no restaurant, no spa. Book early for weekends.

€ Budget

Nice Nest Boutique Hotel

  • 8.4/10 from 109 guest reviews
  • About 1.6 km east of the town hall
  • Free parking, hot tub, garden
  • €98 a night · 10–12 November 2026

Nice Nest is the cheapest well-reviewed private room we found in Odense: every room has its own bathroom, and there's free parking on site. It's about twenty minutes on foot from the centre, or a few minutes by car or bus.

If you are driving in from Jutland or Zealand and want a clean, calm base without paying city-centre prices, this is the one.

The catch: it has far fewer reviews than the other two, so there's less certainty, and it isn't in the old town. Fine with a car, less ideal without one.

Which part of Odense should you stay in?

The old town and the H.C. Andersen Quarter

Cobbled lanes, half-timbered houses, the cathedral of St Canute and the new H.C. Andersen's House museum. This is where most visitors spend their time, and the best area for a first trip without a car. Hotels here are few and fill up fast on summer weekends and during the Christmas market season.

Around the station and Kongens Have

The most practical area if you arrive by train: Odense sits on the main line between Copenhagen and Jutland, and the station is a short walk from the centre. Hotel Odeon and several chain hotels are here. The King's Garden park is right in front of the station.

Outside the centre, with parking

Along the ring roads and towards the motorway you'll find hotels with free parking and lower prices, including our budget pick. Good for drivers, families and anyone combining Odense with Egeskov Castle or a drive around Funen.

Getting there

  • By train: direct trains from Copenhagen Central take a little over an hour and a quarter; there are also direct trains from Copenhagen Airport.
  • By plane: Billund Airport is about an hour away by car. Copenhagen Airport is the bigger hub, with a direct train.
  • In town: walk. For longer hops, the Odense light rail runs north–south through the city.

When prices go up

Odense is mostly a business and short-break city, so prices move with events: big conferences, concerts, the summer holidays and December, when the Christmas markets bring a lot of weekend visitors. A mid-week stay in November is about as cheap as Odense gets. Our prices above are from exactly that kind of week, so expect more on a summer Saturday.

Coming soon: the film

We're planning to film our Odense picks this autumn. When the video is ready, it will be on this page and on the Odense hotels page.
