Who it suits and who should skip it

Hakone is not a cheap place to sleep, and this 3-star hotel is the lower-cost way in. It scores 8.3 out of 10 from 1,193 reviews, lists family rooms and free parking, and has a 24-hour front desk.

Drivers and families are the most natural fit. Food-focused guests also do well here, because the breakfast is the most praised part of the stay.

Skip it if spotless rooms are non-negotiable. Cleanliness reports are mixed. It also had the lowest guest score among the 7 eligible hotels we compared, so you are trading some quality for price.

Location in Sengokuhara and getting around

The hotel is at Sengokuhara 934, in the Sengokuhara Onsen area. Guests say it is near bus stops and museums, with a convenience store a short walk away. The location score is 7.8 out of 10, lower than the other numbers in its profile.

The Pola Museum of Art is about 1.2 km away, roughly 15 minutes on foot. The Hakone Open-Air Museum is about 4.2 km, around 53 minutes, and Hakone Shrine is about 6.8 km, around 85 minutes. Those two are far, so you will need public transport or a taxi. All times are straight-line estimates.

What guests say

Breakfast leads the praise. The buffet is described as large and varied, with made-to-order omelettes and onigiri. Guests also like being close to bus stops, museums and a convenience store.

The main weakness is cleanliness. Some guests find the rooms tidy, while others report dust, hair and stained furniture. With nearly 1,200 reviews, that split is worth taking seriously.

Hotel Sengokuhara 533, our Best Value pick, scored 9.1 with 4 stars at €263.80 a night, about €103 more. Hotel Indigo Hakone Gora by IHG, our Luxury pick, scored 8.9 with 5 stars at €571.59. If the cleanliness reports worry you, the Best Value pick is the obvious step up.

Listed facilities are free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a 24-hour front desk, free parking and family rooms. A buffet breakfast is listed, but whether it is included in your rate is not confirmed.
