This is our Budget pick for Sydney, and unusually for a budget choice it holds 4 stars. Guests score it 8.5 out of 10 from 2,465 reviews.
It suits travellers who like a neighbourhood feel with supermarkets and places to eat nearby. Guests praise a friendly team that helps with luggage storage and early check-in requests. The property lists a gym, a pool, family rooms, free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and a terrace.
Skip it if space in the bathroom or kitchenette is important. Opinions on room size are split: some guests find the living areas generous, others find the bathroom and kitchenette tight.
Location and getting around
The address is 28 Macleay Street, Potts Point, and the location score is 9.3. Guests describe a central Potts Point spot near public transport, supermarkets and dining.
The Australian Securities Exchange is 1.4 km away, about 18 minutes on foot. Sydney Tower is 1.5 km, about 19 minutes, and the Sydney Opera House 1.7 km, about 21 minutes. These are straight-line estimates, so real routes may take a little longer, but all three are walkable.
What guests say
Location and staff lead the praise. Guests like being near transport, supermarkets and restaurants, and they mention staff who help with luggage storage and early check-in.
The mixed point is room size. Some describe generous living areas, while others say the bathroom and kitchenette feel cramped. If you plan to cook or you are sharing with family, check the room details carefully.
Price and how it compares with our other two picks
The reference price we saw was about €200 per night, roughly €399 for the 2-night reference stay in November 2026 for 2 adults. It is a reference price, not a live quote, so check today's price for your dates. The sample median was about €301 per night, so this sits well below the typical rate.
Hyde Park Inn, our Best Value pick, is also 4 stars with an 8.2 score at about €379 per night. Capella Sydney, our Luxury pick, is 5 stars with a 9.7 score at about €867 per night. In our reference stay the Macleay was roughly €180 per night cheaper than Hyde Park Inn and scored slightly higher, though it sits further from the central business district.
Breakfast options listed include Continental, Full English/Irish, Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten-free, American and Breakfast to go. Whether breakfast is included in your rate is not confirmed.
Why it made our top 3
We compared 13 eligible properties in Sydney. For the Budget slot we take the lowest eligible reference price after the upscale choice has been set aside, and the Macleay came out cheapest. Its review-score position was 10 of 13, so price drove the pick, backed by a solid score from a large number of reviews.
Before you book
