Who it suits and who should skip it

This four-star hotel sits at Kornhausstrasse 3 in Breitenrain-Lorraine, just across the river from Bern's Old Town. It works well for travellers who want reliable service and a few extra facilities. The property lists a gym, a restaurant, family rooms, air conditioning, a garden and a terrace, and it is tagged as pet friendly.

If you want to step out of the door straight into the arcades of the Old Town, this is not that hotel. And if every franc counts, the add-ons may annoy you. Several guests feel parking and breakfast are priced high.

Location and getting around

Guests rate the location 9.4 out of 10 and describe it as a short walk across the bridge to the Old Town and city centre. Our straight-line estimates put the Zytglogge clock tower about 600 metres away, roughly eight minutes on foot. Bern Minster is about 700 metres, around nine minutes, and the Federal Palace about 800 metres, around ten minutes.

These are estimates, not measured routes, and a bridge crossing may add a few minutes. For most visitors the main sights are comfortably walkable.

What guests say

The score of 8.8 comes from 2,923 reviews, a large base. Staff get the warmest comments: friendly, helpful and professional, with a welcome many guests mention. The walk into the Old Town is the other recurring plus.

Value for money is where opinions split. Some find the room rates reasonable for Bern. Others point to high charges for parking and breakfast, which can push the total up noticeably.

Price compared with our other Bern picks

Our Budget pick, ibis Styles Bern City, is three stars, scores 8.5 and cost €170.51 a night. Our Luxury pick, Hotel Schweizerhof Bern & Spa, is five stars, scores 9.0 and cost €742.59 a night. Swissôtel sits in between: about €49 more than the ibis per night for a higher score, a gym and four-star status, and far less than the Schweizerhof.

Breakfast options listed include continental, vegetarian, gluten-free and buffet. Whether breakfast is included in your rate is not confirmed, and guests say it is costly when it is not.

Why it made our top 3

We compared 8 eligible hotels in Bern. Swissôtel Kursaal ranked joint third on guest score, and the Best Value slot rewards a balance of score, number of reviews and price rather than the lowest rate. Nearly 3,000 reviews at 8.8, a price below the median and a walkable location made it the strongest middle option.
