This is our Budget pick for Darlington, and it is an unusual one: a 3-star hotel in a castle setting at Walworth, outside the town. It suits drivers, couples on a short break, people travelling with a pet (pets appear in the property tags) and anyone who values quiet grounds over being close to shops.
It is a weaker fit if you have no car and want to explore Darlington on foot. The data gives no walking time to the town centre, and guests describe the setting as rural. Travellers who watch every pound at dinner should also read the guest comments on dining prices below.
Location and getting around
The address is simply Walworth, and guests describe a quiet, rural setting with beautiful grounds near the A1M and Darlington. The location score is 9.2, which is high, but it reflects how guests rate the setting, not a short walk to town.
The one nearby point in our data is Walworth Castle, listed at 0.8 km, about 10 minutes on foot as a straight-line estimate. We have no verified distances to the town centre, the rail station or other sights. Free parking is listed, which helps. If you plan to arrive without a car, check taxi options and journey times before you book.
What guests say
The score is 8.3 out of 10 from 1,288 reviews, a large sample for a hotel of this size. Staff come up most often: guests call the team friendly, professional and helpful, and several mention that staff offer tours of the dungeon.
The grounds and the calm setting are the other strong point. On the downside, some guests say the rates are reasonable for the setting but find the dining and rooms expensive. Room size, noise levels and the condition of the rooms have not been assessed, so read recent reviews for those details.
Price and what you get compared with our other picks
The reference price seen for a 2-night stay in November 2026 for 2 adults was €114.36 per night. That is about 30% below the median of €164.07 among the hotels we compared. These are reference prices, not live quotes, so check today's price for your dates.
Our Best Value pick, Holiday Inn Darlington - NORTH A1M, JCT.59 by IHG, was €117.74 a night with a score of 8.2, so the gap between the two is small. Our Luxury pick, Rockliffe, scores 9.2 at 5 stars but was €646.98 a night. For a few euros less than the Holiday Inn you get a slightly higher score and the castle grounds.
Listed facilities include a restaurant, a garden, free Wi-Fi and free parking. Breakfast options listed are continental, full English or Irish, vegetarian, vegan and breakfast to go. Whether breakfast is included in your rate is not confirmed.
Why it made our top 3
We compared 6 eligible hotels in Darlington. Walworth Castle Hotel had the lowest eligible reference price once the upscale choice was set aside, and its review score sits joint second of the 6. A cheap price with a strong score and over a thousand reviews is exactly what the Budget slot is for.
Before you book
Check whether breakfast is included and what dinner costs, since dining prices are the main complaint. Confirm the pet policy and any fee if you are bringing an animal. Ask about room size and cancellation terms, which we have not assessed. If you do not drive, work out how you will reach Darlington and back.
